How is Face Recognition Technology used in the Ports & Terminals Industry?

In the last couple of years, ports and terminals have had to review their security operations, and start looking towards compliance with the new International Shipping and Ports Security (ISPS) code - brought in following 9’11 and the resulting terrorist and security threats. Facial recognition has been in operation in this industry since 1999, and now a number of port operators are looking to implement the technology to tighten up their security measures.

There are two potential uses of ‘FaceRec’ in support of the ISPS code:

Biometric Facial Recognition Ports and Terminals
Biometric Face Recognition Ports and Terminals
  • verification of staff, contractors, ship passengers etc, both to prevent identity fraud, and to provide accurate information as to who is on site / on board at any one time.
  • carrying out identification checks (using facial recognition) of new or unannounced personnel arriving at the site against a watch-list of known terrorist or criminal elements
